Overview

ALGIM has been involved in information management for decades. We know how complex it can be, and how difficult it is to keep up with professional and personal development.  So, we've worked closely with nationally renowned IM expert Kerri Siatiras to develop online courses for local authority IM practitioners.

    This introductory level course is designed for those who are new to information and records management, new to information and records management in local authorities, or those who want to understand more about the 'why' of information management and what it involves.


    The course explores all the basics of information and records management across both the physical and digital environments. It also covers the role information and records professionals play in their organisation and how good information management contributes to, and supports the overall functions and goals of the local authority.


    The course is divided into seven modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its' own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework given between modules to support learning.

      Kerri is an independent information and records management consultant with extensive experience as both a practitioner and consultant. Kerri was an owner and consultant with the successful independent consulting firm SWIM Ltd for 15 years during which time she helped develop the IM Toolkit with ALGIM.         ALGIM are running an online local authority archives management course, delivered by Kerri Siatiras.


        This course will complement the material provided in the ALGIM IM Toolkit Module B6 Local Authority Archives Management Guidelines.

        The course explores all the basics of disposing of information and records management across both the physical, and digital environments. It also covers the processes involved in disposal, the legal requirements and how to utilise the ALGIM Disposal Schedule.


        The course is divided into four modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

        The course is designed for those that have a reasonable level of experience in the information management world. We explore the creation and implementation a taxonomy/classification structures for your document based information and records environments. It is specifically designed for the local authority sector with reference to the ALGIM classification structure/taxonomy, as well as development of your own taxonomy. We also explore the hardest part of the process – its implementation!


        The course is divided into four modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

            Introducing Information Management for Local Authorities

            Designed for: Those starting their IM career. This course is suitable for junior level IM practitioners.

            Method: 7 online modules of 90 minutes each.

            Pre-requisites: None.


            This beginner course is designed for those who are new to information management and the specific requirements relating to the management of information and records in local authorities.

            The course explores all the basics of information management across both the physical, and digital environments, from creation through to disposal.  It also covers the role IM practitioners play in their organisation, and how good IM contributes to and supports the overall functions and goals of the local authority.

            The course is divided into seven modules of 90 minutes each.  Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand.  There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

            Disposing of Local Authority Information and Records 


            Designed for: Those that have been working in IM for several years. This is an intermediate level course.


            Method: 7 online modules of 90 minutes each.


            Pre-requisites: completion of the Introducing Information Management for Local Authorities course, or equivalent experience.



            This intermediate course is designed for IM Practitioners who are responsible for managing the disposal of information and records within their local authority.

            The course explores the principles and practices involved with the disposal of information and records management across both the physical, and digital environments. It also covers the legal requirements relating to disposal in New Zealand, the processes involved in disposal, and how to use the ALGIM Disposal Schedule. Participants must have access to the ALGIM IM Toolkit Module BP06.

            The course is divided into four modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

            Managing Local Authority Archives

            Designed for: Those that have responsibility for local authority archives and have bene working in the IM or archival roles for several years. This is an intermediate level course.

            Method: 7 online modules of 90 minutes each.

            Pre-requisites: completion of the Introducing Information Management for Local Authorities course, or equivalent experience.


            This intermediate course is designed for IM practitioners who have responsibility for their local authority or community archives, but who don’t have a background in archives management. Many local authorities don't have dedicated archivists, and/or the archives are supported as part of the overarching information and records management function. It is expected all participants will already have a foundation in information management.

            The course complements the material provided in the ALGIM IM Toolkit module BP04 Local Authority Archives and covers the management of both physical and digital archive collections.  Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework between modules to support learning.

            Information Asset Management


            Designed for: Those that have worked in IM for a number of years. This is an intermediate level course.


            Method: 4 online modules of 90 minutes each.


            Pre-requisites: completion of the Introducing Information Management for Local Authorities course, or equivalent experience.



            This advanced course is designed for Senior IM Practitioners who already understand core concepts relating to information management, and are charged with the management of information assets, whether paper-based or digital. This course explores the ideas around information being an asset, how we can understand what information assets we hold (through development of an information asset register), and how managing information assets can improve information management within your organisation.

            The course is divided into four modules of 90 minutes each.  Each module is delivered online with its' own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand.  There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

            Developing an Information Management Strategy


            Designed for: Those that have worked in IM for a number of years. This is a senior level programme designed for those that are about to develop or update their IM Strategy.


            Method: 7 online modules of 90 minutes each, plus substantive homework during extended breaks between online sessions. Also includes two one-on-one coaching sessions.


            Pre-requisites: completion of the Introducing Information Management for Local Authorities course, or equivalent experience.


            An IM Strategy is an essential tool for organisations as it prioritises planning for managing information, and links IM initiatives to overall business strategies and plans. This strategic programme, developed for IM Leads and Managers, is more than just an online course.  As well as scheduled online class sessions, it includes coaching and one-on-one mentoring to support attendees in the development of an IM strategy for their local authority.

            The course is divided into seven modules of 90 minutes each.  Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There are also two extended out of class periods where attendees have the chance to get started on developing their IM strategy. The online group sessions are then followed up with one-on-one coaching sessions to maximise the benefits of the learning.

            Follow-up sessions:

            • First follow-up one-on-one session a month later. A one-hour online discussion with you and Kerri about what you have achieved, any barriers to achieving the goals identified for the first 30 days and working through options to address those barriers.
            • Second follow-up one-on-one session scheduled when the draft IM strategy is completed. A one-hour online discussion between attendee and Kerri about their draft IM Strategy.

            IM Monitoring and Reporting


            Designed for: Those that have worked in IM for a number of years. This is a senior level course designed for IM managers, or Senior IM Practitioners who are responsible for monitoring and reporting on IM activities and services.


            Method: 4 online modules of 90 minutes each.


            Pre-requisites: completion of the Introducing Information Management for Local Authorities course, or equivalent experience.


            The course explores why we need to monitor IM, types of measurement, what monitoring and reporting are and what kind of things we should be monitoring in relation to IM within our organisations. We discuss what may be appropriate and how to ensure the monitoring and reporting we do is useful.

            The course is divided into four modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

            Taxonomy Development for Local Authorities

            Designed for: Those that have worked in IM for a number of years. This is an intermediate level course.

            Method: 4 online modules of 90 minutes each.

            Pre-requisites: completion of the Introducing Information Management for Local Authorities course, or equivalent experience.

            This course is designed for those that have a reasonable level of experience in the information management world. We explore the creation and implementation a taxonomy/classification structures for your document-based information and records environments. It is specifically designed for the local authority sector with reference to the ALGIM classification structure/taxonomy, as well as development of your own taxonomy. Participants must have access to the ALGIM IM Toolkit Module BP05. We also explore the hardest part of the process – its implementation!

            The course is divided into four modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.

            Disposal Schedule Interpretation and Implementation Workshop

            Designed for: Those that have been working in IM for several years. This is an intermediate level course.

            Method: 2 online modules of 90 minutes each.

            Pre-requisites: completion of the Disposing of Local Authority Information and Records course.


            These workshops are designed for those that have already completed the ALGIM course Disposing of Local Authority Information and Records and are ready to, or already implementing the ALGIM disposal schedule.

            The focus of the workshops is on understanding and customising the ALGIM disposal schedule to support practical interpretation and implementation processes. Participants must have access to the ALGIM IM Toolkit Module BP06.

            The course is divided into two modules of 90 minutes each. Each module is delivered online with its own workbook which is sent out to participants beforehand. Participants are asked prior to the workshops to provide real world questions/queries in relation the schedule to explore during the sessions. There is also a small amount of homework to be done between modules to support learning.
