Mental wellness in the workplace is a growing focus for many organisations. And with good reason. But most leaders and organisations are still struggling to know how to tackle stress and mental wellness in the workplace effectively.

Burnout is a big problem. But it’s only in recent times that we’re coming to realise just HOW big: a recent Gallup study found that 23 percent of nearly 7,500 full-time employees reported feeling burned out at work very often or always, while an additional 44 percent reported feeling burned out sometimes. That's over half the workforce surveyed suffering from burnout.

Job burnout is estimated to account for an eye watering $125 billion to $190 billion in health-care spending each year globally. The financial cost to New Zealand organisations of burnout in turnover, absenteeism, lower engagement and reduced productivity are well documented – and would give any leader a headache.

And the World Health Organisation? They’ve just classed it as an official occupational phenomenon. That’s a big deal. It seems that while organisations have got to grips with the importance of physical safety, we've a long way to go when it comes to nurturing and caring for our employees’ mental well-being.

Therefore, in this interactive and practical webinar talk, Suzi outlines the causes, symptoms and antidotes of burnout in organisations. Based on both primary and secondary research conducted for her bestselling book Beyond Burnout, this talk will provide participants with practical steps to identify, prevent and address burnout and workplace stress. This will include the following sections:

  • What exactly is burnout? And what is it not? Why stress in itself is not the problem.
  • The 3 red flags or symptoms of burnout to watch out for in yourself and in your team mates.
  • The 6 main causes of burnout. Overwork is just one of them.
  • Debunking several myths surrounding burnout - including who might be the most at risk  (spoiler alert: its hardly ever your low performers!)
  • The four key strategies (recognise, destigmatise, socialise and organise) which leaders, individuals and organisations alike can adopt to identify, avoid and reduce burnout and unmanageable stress in the workplace. And how to create an environment where people, as well as profits, thrive.
  • Q and A
