2012 ALGIM Records Management Symposium Information Professionals: The life blood of organisations
23 & 24 July 2012 James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, Wellington
Adrian Humphris, Team Leader for City Archives at the Wellington City Council, has been confirmed to present at the 2012 ALGIM Records Management Symposium which is being held 23 & 24 July 2012.
Adrian has been with the Council for over 21-years, starting with Archives as the junior in a team of two. Over the past two decades he has been involved in a wide range of activities for Archives, from planning the relocation of the collection to the current purpose built facilities to implementing digital access for public reference services and overseeing the development of standards and procedures. He was the inaugural ALGIM Archivist of the year in 2009, is actively involved in the Wellington Region Archives Shared Services group, and is on the NZ Council for RIM Professionals Australia.
City Archives, which is part of the Information Management Business Unit, is responsible for preserving the Council’s records of long term value. As well as providing a range of reference services, Archives works closely with City Records to help the Council extract maximum value from the information it holds, while ensuring Council can comply with relevant legislation.
Shared services initiatives between local authorities have become a common approach to increase efficiency, reduce costs and provide improved services to ratepayers. There can be numerous benefits from looking at service delivery across organisations, or across departments within organisations.
In 2009 the Wellington Region Local Authorities Shared Services Charter was initiated. This established the strategy and basis for the shared services implementation programme in the Wellington region. A number of work groups have been set up, each focusing on a particular service. These groups report back to an ICT Steering Group who in turn report to the Chief Executives Forum, a governance group comprising city and district CEOs in the Wellington Region, which has ultimate accountability for delivering the shared service implementation.
The Wellington Region Archives Shared Services, or WRASS, is one of these work groups. The group was formed in mid-2009, and has since investigated a number of options to pool resources, share costs, and collaborate on projects from shared descriptive standards through to the development of an online portal and regional archive facility. Success has varied due to the resourcing and time commitments available, but there have been significant benefits from working across the region, which will continue to grow as further progress is made.
