The 2011 Annual ALGIM Conference is fast approaching, with registrations being taken until the close of business on Wednesday 16 November 2011.
2011 has been an extraordinary year for natural disasters throughout the world and particularly in our region. These events gave many organisations, including Local Government Authorities, a reality check in terms of business continuity and disaster recovery plans. With this in mind, ALGIM has put aside time slots that will focus specifically on these aspects in times of a natural disaster.
Robin Johansen, Chief Information Officer for Beca Group, will talk about his experiences in both the Queensland flood and Christchurch earthquakes with the aim of this presentation assisting those who have responsibilities in the ICT area to establish or improve disaster readiness for the future.
Beca is one of the largest employee-owned engineering and related consultancy services groups in the Asia Pacific region. In 1918, Beca was established in New Zealand with only three employees and is still headquartered here. Now, Beca has a substantial Asia Pacific footprint with over 2,500 employees operational in 17 offices across the world.
From an ICT perspective, Robin with address the things that worked well, the simple things which caused difficulty, the things which didn’t work and the importance of human factors in planning for these events.
The second presentation will be by InternetNZ Chief Executive, Vikram Kumar. Vikram’s presentation will focus specifically on the role of social media when a natural disaster strikes. Social media, both by official authorities and the community, will play an increasingly important role in the future when a natural disaster strikes.
Vikram will provide a summary of his experiences and insights when working with the Canterbury region after the Christchurch Earthquake struck, as well as discussing the recommendations made to Wellington City Council.
