The role of local government in a digital world

The ALGIM Annual Conference will be held 13th - 15th November 2017 at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre, Rotorua.

The Annual ALGIM Conference is the premier event for ICT professionals in the public sector (local and central government). It is designed for the sector by the sector, and aims to bring local and central government ICT practitioners together to share knowledge, recognise best practice, and develop professional skills. For the 2017 event this Conference will also host a technical stream focused on Infrastructure.

Highlights of the 2017 event include:

  • Jos Creese, UK expert in the digital transformation of local government is coming to our conference to share the wealth of knowledge he has built up during his many years working in IT for many British councils.
  • Like many councils, City of Ballarat is facing pressure to provide more services, cope with increasing demand, and meet citizens’ expectations for digital transactions; all while keeping rate rises low. Martijn Schroder is their digital transformation manager, and he’ll share how they managed these competing pressures.
  • Smart cities are great – but what if you aren’t a city? Russell Bennett from the award-winning South Grampians Shire Council, a rural council to the west of Melbourne, faced this exact issue.
  • What if your council could be a native Google council? Hear from Google's Scott Thomson about what the tech giant can offer local government.
  • The era of big data is here, but how are you going to make the most of it? Auckland University’s Shaun Hendy will present amazing case studies, including how his team tracked the flu across New Zealand using cell phone data
  • People are often pointing out the limitations of AI – one of which is the ability to read emotions. So, what would happen if AI gained emotional intelligence?
  • He doesn’t do anything by halves. Whether it’s culture, innovation, disruption, or ideas vs execution, Robitt Hollis is a dynamic speaker who will get you thinking outside the box.
  • Cybersecurity is crucial to respond to the clear and present danger posed by ransomware, viruses, phishing and more. Paul Ash, Director at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet’s National Cyber Policy Office will address how at risk local government is.

2017 Annual and Infrastructure ALGIM Awards

The Annual ALGIM Awards recognise and celebrate best practice within local government information technology and information management.  They aim to encourage local authorities to be innovative and to exercise technological leadership through services to its community.  The awards also promote the image of local government ICT throughout the wider community.

We have arranged competitive rates with two hotels near the events centre. Please book early, as there are limited numbers of rooms available at the arranged pricing.

You can book with Millennium Hotel Rotorua by following these instructions:

Go the website,then enter the check in & out dates and press check availability – ignore the results of this search as the hotel may show fully booked or higher rates
On the right side of the screen click on "Codes and options" then enter ALGIM17under group code and click update results.

Parking and transport

A wide variety of transport options are available from the airport to the central city, including shuttles, car rental, taxis, and buses. These options can be found on the Rotorua Airport website.

The Energy Events Centre’s provides extensive car parking and is also within easy walking distance from the accommodation.
