The 2012 ALGIM GIS Symposium was held on 2 & 3 April 2012 at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, Wellington.
Symposium Highlights
Some of the symposium highlights included:
- Minister for Land Information, Hon Maurice Williamson MP returned to formally open the Symposium.
- Ian Smith, Auckland Council’s Geospatial Manager answered ‘where are we now?’ in a follow up to his presentation ‘Creation of the Geospatial Service at Auckland Council’ which featured at the Inaugural 2011 ALGIM GIS Symposium.
- Suzanne Butler, Waitaki District Council, talked about her experience at the Intergraph Conference ‘Hexagon 2011’ held in Orlando Florida, USA. Suzanne was the recipient of the 2011 ALGIM GIS Professional Development Award, which provided her with the opportunity to attend the Conference.
- We learnt about ‘Predicting GeoSpatial Futures’ from David Swann, CEO of NorthSouth GIS New Zealand (formerly Explorer Graphics Ltd).
- Terralink International Ltd General Manager, Greg Huddleston, shared advances in mobile mapping technologies which open up some exciting opportunities for Local Authorities in relation to how they capture, view and use street level GIS data.
- Featuring international case studies, discover how leading authorities are taking control of their data, and enabling smarter, more efficient back-end processes with Jos Kunnen, Chief Executive Officer, Critchlow Limited.
- George Havakis, Managing Director of Gissa presented on “A-SPEC Digital Data Specifications | An Initiative For Asset Owners”.
- We were informed how the result of a simple request within a major project at Southland District Council has seen Mark Day (Manager – Property & Spatial) and his team evolved a key tool used to assess the value of productivity flowing through a roading network to a destination.

Scott O’Brien from Australia’s Explore Engage (specialists in digital media and 3D applications) presented on the fast emerging technology known as augmented reality (AR), sharing insights on the evolution of media consumption, visualisation tools, adoption rates of AR, income opportunities and community safety.
- A year on from the devastating Canterbury earthquakes, representatives from Christchurch City Council, Environment Canterbury, Eagle Technology Ltd and Intergraph Corporation (NZ) Ltd shared their stories and concluded with a panel discussion.

2012 ALGIM GIS Awards
The ALGIM GIS Awards recognise and celebrate best practice in GIS amongst New Zealand local authorities. They aim to encourage local government staff to be innovative and to grow and be recognised in supporting their organisation and communities of interest. They also promote the image of local government GIS throughout the wider sector.
